The Sure Relief
What shall we find in running in faith to our mighty LORD, our Strong Tower? “The righteous runs into it and is safe.”
“And is safe.” Here is what the righteous who run enjoy—safety and deliverance. Some of the versions translate that the righteous is “set on high, raised up,” for that is the word used here: “exalted.” Running to the LORD we are lifted up out of the reach of our danger and our enemies, sheltered in the midst of storms and onslaughts. This is encouragement to our running to this tower.
I am reminded of a popular photograph that many of you may have seen of a lighthouse splitting a wave almost its same height. It is a fascinating photograph to me—all the power of that mighty wave breaking in on this lighthouse. Yet it stands immovable! A picture of stability in the face of overwhelming force. There is a strong tower. But the analogy is not a really sufficient one (if any analogy could be sufficient where the power of our Lord is concerned!). It would be better for us to see a picture of mighty waves breaking harmlessly at the base of huge mountain to maintain the sense. We are not like that man in the lighthouse but like that one who lives on the top of the mountain whose base the mighty waves can only lick! In this tower we are safe and secured. The psalmist tells us in Psalm 125:1, “Those who trust in the LORD are as Mount Zion, which cannot be moved but abides forever.”
We are completely safe.
We are safe from sin, its dominion and damnation.“What shall separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” (Rom. 8:35). Nothing! Not “death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created things, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38-39).
We are surely safe.
We do not need to cast up more reinforcements in the tower. We cannot strengthen it more. Therefore, there is no place for knee-knocking anxiety in the tower. You are safe. When you begin to doubt go touch the walls of sovereignty again. They are eternal walls, solid walls. They have supported and sheltered countless refugees. You can go about your business undisturbed.
We are blessedly safe.
Towers can be dreary places. But not the One to which we run! We are safe in the most blessed place. We have not taken refuge in a dark dungeon, but in the blessed and bountiful “bunker” that is the Lord Himself. All the riches of His grace are available. In this tower is a storehouse of every spiritual blessing for every spiritual need. You are not in a moat, but in the lovely haven of super-abounding, ever-abounding mercy!
We are permanently safe.
I go back to Psalm 125. In verse 2 we read: “As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His people from this time forth and forever.” That is a long, long, time!
And those who know Thy name will put their trust in Thee;
for Thou, O LORD, hast not forsaken those who seek Thee (Ps. 9:10)
