Possible Discussion Questions

  • Why was it necessary that the “twelve” be “with Jesus”?
  • What would they learn from being with Him that would be helpful for the mission they were
    about to be sent on?
  • What did Jesus give to His disciples before He sent them out? How does the Lord equip us
for ministry and service in these days?
  • What was the mission priority for the disciples?
  • What is the “kingdom of God” which the disciples are to proclaim?
  • What is the message of the “good news” (gospel) of that kingdom? (Consider Luke 1:31-33,
    68-79; 2:11, 30-32; 3:16-18; 4:18-19; 5:20; 7:48-50; 8:48, 50)
  • Why does Jesus tell His disciples to take “nothing” with them as they go out?
  • Why does Jesus want his disciples to “stay put” at the house that welcomes them?
  • What does Jesus’ instruction in verse 5 indicate about how some people would respond to
    His messengers?
  • What was the dramatic gesture of “shaking the dust off the feet” supposed to signify to the
people who lived in that city? (see also Acts 13:48-52).
  • How faithful were the disciples to the commission Jesus gave them?
  • What in this account made the greatest impression on you? What was most encouraging or
    helpful to you?
  • What, if anything, are you challenged to do on account of this passage?

Close with prayer, thanking God for His Word, asking Him to help you to understand, hold on to, and faithfully apply what you have heard.
